CENTRAL COUNTY WATER CONTROL DISTRICT
PRESS RELEASE
JUNE 29, 2023.. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.
In 2022, the CENTRAL COUNTY WATER CONTROL DISTRICT (CCWCD) submitted a capital grant application for a total amount of $4,050,000 in the 2022/2023 Resilient Florida grant cycle. In 2021, the Resilient Florida program was created by the Florida legislature with the Governor’s leadership to assist coastal and inland communities, recognizing that Florida is vulnerable to flooding, storm surge, sea level rise, and the potential for increasingly severe rain events. Out of 269 submittals, the CCWCD grant applications was ranked 3 on project funding list contained with the 2023-24 Statewide Flood and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan which can be found at: 2023-24 Statewide Flood and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan.
Historically, persistent flooding impacts in the CCWCD have severely limited residents access to, into and out of the community including the homes, business and public facilities. Improvements to the CCWCD flood control system can result in improved flood protection, reduced water quality impacts that discharge into the South Florida Water Management District’s regional system through the G-134, F-152 and L-2 canal, as well as enhancement/restoration of wetlands.
The Projects, funded through this state of Florida grant program, are comprised of several features to address flooding and other related issues within the CCWCD. New flood control pumps will be added to the flood protection infrastructure to increase capacity to manage stormwater and convey it to the CCWCD’s existing 4 square mile reservoir. The Projects also include canal improvements, regrading, side drain replacement, upgrades to roadside drainage swales. Wetlands restoration will occur within the existing reservoir to better manage the water flows within the reservoir itself, provide enhanced ecosystem benefits through natural restoration and improve water quality before water is discharged into the SFWMD regional system. The project includes preconstruction, engineering and design within the project scope to secure final design and permits for the project and all construction costs.
Juan Mata, Chairman of the CCWCD Board of Supervisors states… “I am thankful to the Florida legislature and the Governor’s office for supporting the CCWCD grant application”. Mata noted that “This grant represents a series of projects that will greatly improve the quality of life for CCWCD residents.”
About the CCWCD. The CCWCD, established in 1970, is a water control district organized under Chapter 298, Florida statutes. The CCWCD is located in Hendry County, approximately six miles south of State Road 80 abutting the east side of County Road 833. The CCWCD’s statutory mission is focused on flood protection, maintenance of roadways, and recreation.
