NOTICE OF CANCELLATION OF BOARD OF SUPERVISORS REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING FOR CENTRAL COUNTY WATER CONTROL DISTRICT

Central County Water Control District Responds to Extreme Rainfall Event

For Immediate Release
Hendry County, Florida – The Central County Water Control District (“CCWCD”) is actively responding to severe flooding caused by several days of heavy rainfall in Hendry County. The district’s personnel and pumping equipment have been operating at full capacity to manage the unprecedented water levels.
Key points:
  1. Recent rainfall has exceeded a 1-in-100-year storm event based on data collected over the past several days.
  2. CCWCD staff and pumps have been working around the clock to mitigate flooding.
  3. Thanks to these efforts, floodwaters have begun to recede in affected areas.
  4. CCWCD will continue 24/7 operations until conditions return to normal.
  5. The timeframe for full recovery depends on weather conditions in the coming days.

“This is the 100 Year – 3 day rainfall map from the South Florida Water Management District.  As you can see that Montura has experienced over a 100-year 3-day event over the last two days with 6” of rainfall each day.  If we have more rainfall today, it will greatly exceed the 100 year 3 day event.  With all 10 pumps pumping without evaporation and infiltration, it would take 9 days to remove all the water from the area, ” said Steve Dobbs, District Engineer.

“Our team has been working tirelessly to protect our community from this extraordinary rainfall event,” said Rebbecca Hernandez, Interim District Supervisor of CCWCD.
“While we have made significant progress in reducing flood levels, we remain vigilant and committed to operating at full capacity until the situation fully stabilizes.”
CCWCD urges residents to stay informed about local conditions and follow any safety advisories issued by local authorities. Updates on the district’s flood response efforts will be provided as the situation evolves.

CENTRAL COUNTY WATER CONTROL DISTRICT

PRESS RELEASE

JUNE 29, 2023.. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

In 2022, the CENTRAL COUNTY WATER CONTROL DISTRICT (CCWCD) submitted a capital grant application for a total amount of $4,050,000 in the 2022/2023 Resilient Florida grant cycle. In 2021, the Resilient Florida program was created by the Florida legislature with the Governor’s leadership to assist coastal and inland communities, recognizing that Florida is vulnerable to flooding, storm surge, sea level rise, and the potential for increasingly severe rain events. Out of 269 submittals, the CCWCD grant applications was ranked 3 on project funding list contained with the  2023-24 Statewide Flood and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan which can be found at:  2023-24 Statewide Flood and Sea Level Rise Resilience Plan.

Historically, persistent flooding impacts in the CCWCD have severely limited residents access to, into and out of the community including the homes, business and public facilities. Improvements to the CCWCD flood control system can result in improved flood protection, reduced water quality impacts that discharge into the South Florida Water Management District’s regional system through the G-134, F-152 and L-2 canal, as well as enhancement/restoration of wetlands.

The Projects, funded through this state of Florida grant program, are comprised of several features to address flooding and other related issues within the CCWCD. New flood control pumps will be added to the flood protection infrastructure to increase capacity to manage stormwater and convey it to the CCWCD’s existing 4 square mile reservoir.  The Projects also include canal improvements, regrading, side drain replacement, upgrades to roadside drainage swales. Wetlands restoration will occur within the existing reservoir to better manage the water flows within the reservoir itself, provide enhanced ecosystem benefits through natural restoration and improve water quality before water is discharged into the SFWMD regional system. The project includes preconstruction, engineering and design within the project scope to secure final design and permits for the project and all construction costs.

Juan Mata, Chairman of the CCWCD Board of Supervisors states… “I am thankful to the Florida legislature and the Governor’s office for supporting the CCWCD grant application”. Mata noted that “This grant represents a series of projects that will greatly improve the quality of life for CCWCD residents.”

About the CCWCD.  The CCWCD, established in 1970, is a water control district organized under Chapter 298, Florida statutes. The CCWCD is located in Hendry County, approximately six miles south of State Road 80 abutting the east side of County Road 833. The CCWCD’s statutory mission is focused on flood protection, maintenance of roadways, and recreation.
